To better understand the industrial adventure of ochre which completely transformed the Vaucluse landscape from Roussillon to Rustrel in “Provencal Colorado”, you really must visit the Conservatory in a former factory. Here everything is still ochre-coloured, from floor to ceiling. The contrast between the earthy colours and the hues of the pines is stunning and beautiful. Open all year round.

situé à Roussillon :

In this former ochre factory created by those who began the whole adventure in 1871, you can visit and discover basins, ovens, red and yellow ochre mills and a garden used to grow plants for dyeing purposes.
The OKHRA Association is open to both the public and professionals for guided tours, training sessions, and educational workshops for children during the school year and vacation, conferences, practical advice on how to use the hues.
Temporary exhibitions are also available. See what’s scheduled, at the web site: www.okhra.com

There’s also a boutique, numerous books on colours, flasks of pigments, binders, gums and more.
You can rent bikes on the spot and head out to explore the village of Roussillon and the ochre landscapes of the Luberon.
Free admission for under 10's.

Commitment to more sustainable tourism

In 1994, in the heart of the Luberon ochre massif, on the site of the former Mathieu factory, a group of enthusiasts created the Conservatoire des Ocres. Much like a music conservatory, the aim of this center is to promote the color professions and share the various techniques involved.
A visit to the factory, which ceased operations in 1963, provides an insight into the region's working-class past. The adjacent museum retraces the history of the ochre industry, and a library offers a wealth of documentation on dyeing processes.
Faithful to its initial commitment to passing on know-how, Ôkhra offers courses supervised by experts. On the program: coatings, paints, dyes, colors and much more.
